There are three main cloths. The cere cloth is usually waxed and protects the other cloths from the altar material. It is not consecrated. The linen cloth goes next, made of heavy linen, and provides cushioning. Finally the Fair Linen is the long white cloth which is larger than the altar top (mensa) so that it hangs almost to the floor. There is also a Coverlet, which is laid over the Fair Linen when the altar is not in use, and protects it from dust and debris.
