This isn't necccessarily a poltergeist. A poltergeist is, yes, a disruptive or mischeivous and malevalent entitiy, who, by the way, do not "manifest" themselves neither through light nor noise. They "use" light, noise, smell, so on, to play their theatrics for you. Typically, but not always, poltergeists are manifested through our own negative based human emotion, i.e., anger, depression, fear, anxiety, etc. Yes, they will play with your lights, bang things around and such, however, in your case, or your husbands case, it could simply be a spirit family member. When my father passed away 4 years ago, (in Europe, I was not with him) the lamp I had on in the livining room blinked 3 times. Within minutes I received a call from Europe of the news. Interestingly enough, on his one year anniversary the same thing happened both upstairs and downstairs simultaneously. If you are really interested in what is going on, I would keep a camera or video handy to quickly snap photos when this happens. I have caught some spectacular stuff on film and digitally. If you feel that there is a "presence" that you are not comfortable with, I suggest you smudge the house with sage. If you are not sure of what this is, I would gladly explain to you how to do it and how it works. PS.... I would also smudge the car.
