There are said to be 19 major religions in the world today of which Christianity is the largest group.
These 19 religions are further sub-divided into around 270 sub-groups.
With Christianity approximately 34,000 sub groups are listed.
Christianity has around 2 billion followers. this figure includes the major groups of Roman Catholics, Protestants in all sub-divisions, Orthodox Christians from the Russian and Greek Orthodox Churches and Free Church members.
The major world religions are then Christianity, Islam (over 1 billion followers), Jews (approx. 14 .5 million followers), Hindus (over 800 million), Chinese traditional religions, Buddhists.
There's a lot of information on the web about the major religions and their geographical distribution.

The above info was released by the Vatican, the Pope, recently, as in within the last few years. The stats are ROUGHLY- 1.5 billion Muslims, 1 billion Catholics, 1 billion scattered amongst the other Christian faiths (including mormons, and "non-traditionals"), etc. A few other perceptable points are said to be included, but they are just heresay, however, they are definately valid points, such as- there are ~1 billion people who classify themselves as non-denomination.

Of the people who classify themselves as "not believing in a specific religion", many are monotheistic (one god believers). Many anthropologists and religious knowledgables state that there are many followers of the religion of Islam who categorize themselves into this particular category, possibly due to ethical/cultural pressures or issues (for instance being Americans, Europeans, etc, who do not want to openly state that they are Muslims or they have personal issues with Islam)

Buddhism is the largest religion after christianity. .Buddhism is the fastest growing religion in China and about 60 to 80 percent of the chinese population consider themselves buddhist. .That amounts to about 800 million to 1 billion chinese buddhists. .and adding the rest the numbers will be more than 1.5 billion

Mohammad is probably up in Heaven with Moses and Jesus, but the only difference is that Jesus rules over Heaven at the Right Hand of God the Eternal Father (who Muslims call "Allah", Jews call "Yaheweh" and some Christians call "Jehovah", "Abba", or "Father".)  Jesus also stated "I Am" to the Jewish elders; just as God the Father stated "I Am" to Moses.  Jesus rose into Heaven both Body and Spirit after rising from the dead; an event that no historian could disprove, but rather all proponents point to this event as historical fact.  Moses was not "The Way, The Truth, and The Light" as Jesus was, and Mohammad is was on Moses' level as a prophet.  Jesus stated here that He is The Way, The Truth, and The Light of God.  Moses and Mohommad were His prophets.  Just as a man can be father, son and husband to his daughter, mother, and wife (repectively), so did God make a complete relationship with the Human Race through Mary, the Mother of Jesus, by relating to her as Father, Son, and Spouse (God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit respectively), hence the triune God-head, three persons in One God, or probably better worded as  three aspects of One God.

Anybody who is a true follower of Christ and his teachings, believing in Christ as the only Begotten Son of God the Father, is a true Christian; regardless of whether they are Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, or other Protestants.  These are not separate religions, but rather different sects of the faith; just as in Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism you have separate sects [en.wikipedia.org  Catholism is the largest sect, being the western half of the original united Christian Church (Orthodox being the eastern half and the second largest sect).  Both Orthodox and Catholism are very similar in all core beliefs; the only differences being in the traditions of certain celebrations, such as how to perform a wedding, the length of the Christmas Season, etc.  Yet the core religious doctrine of Catholics and Orthodox are very much the same.  This is because, if you put both Catholic and Orthodox Churches together, you get the original Apostolic Church, founded by St. Paul and St. Peter, based on the teachings of Jesus Christ.  Protestants (including Anglicans) are those who Protested against Mother Church (hence the name Protestant) due to conflicts of political and religious beliefs at the time (mostly political).  These were the ones who broke away from the Church in order to found their own version of Christianity.  To this day, the Catholic Church is known to continue its eccumenical efforts to reunite the entire Christian faith under one doctrine through proper communication.

Now whether Christianity is larger, or Islam is larger, is hard to say.  It is a well known fact that Christanity is far more wide-spread than any other religion in the world.  Islam is probably the most visible amoung orthodox, tradiitonal muslims, as you can spot them very easily by their manner of dress.  For most Christians who are not clergy, you would have to check their pockets or under their shirts for any physical symbol of faith.  Just as thousands of people convert to Isalm each day, thosands of other people convert to Christanity each day as well.  There is also Hinduism, Buddhism, Jewdaism, and other major religions who receive a multitude of converts on a daily basis at any given time.
However, it is known that the two largest religions are Christianity and Islam, though most unbiased, third-party sources would demonstrate that Christianity is the larger of the two.  If you want to know for sure which one is bigger, just Google it.

Depends on what you mean by largest.

Christianity has the most believers, but Islam has the most practicing ones. And I think I saw somewhere that Paganism is the most widely-spread, but that's probably not true, so don't quote me on that one!

The absolute and final answer (correct answer) whether some people "like it or not" is that the largest religion in the world is Islam with all Muslims being the followers of Islam and it's god and prophets ("Allah", the exact same god as Christians and Jews believe in, with the exception of the Prophet Muhammed, who is the latest prophet out of the trio of religions.)  Christianity is not a religion, however many uneducated (uneducated implying theologically only) people believe Christianity is a religion.  Christians are a group of a massive number of different religions, with the most populous followers of Christ being Catholisism.  Someone above mentioned the large number of "non-denomination monotheistic" followers.  It is predicted that Islam has the largest number of these "undeclared" persons as well.  For whatever reason they have decided not to "write muslim" down on "surveys", but this makes Islam quite a bit larger than people may perceive the religion to be.

The largest religion in the world is...RELIGION! People are too religious and do not have their feet on the firm Foundation of Jesus Christ! Jesus said "I am the way, the truth and the Life; no man comes to the Father but by me." We need to stop focusing on religion and start following Jesus Christ, Gods only Son who takes away the sins of the World!

Yes at the time of Jesus he was the way, the truth and the life. At the time of Moses, he was the way, the truth and the life. But now, the time of Last and Final prophet Muhammed(PBUH).. He was the way, the truth and the life.

This is pure conjecture. 100 million converting annually? Sources?

My input on the debate is it is difficult to truly judge as there are many uncounted villages in South and Southeast Asia which could boost both animist/traditional, Islam, or Hindu numbers. Also there is known to be a large underground Christian movement in China which none can measure.
