The Christian Bible mentions that there is more than one deity, but only one is supreme among them. Psalms 83:18 says " May people know that you, whose name is Jehovah, You alone are the Most High over all the earth."

We as a species used to. Then we decided there was one all-powerful god, instead of multiple slightly-powerful gods. Then someone decided there was one god, but really that god was split into three separate facets. Then someone decided that that divided god was really just a prophet for the real one god. Then someone decided that Joseph Smith was the only feller who knew the real god, and somehow this god was the same as one we'd decided was the one long ago. Then Tom Cruise jumped up and down on Oprah's couch; although no one else seems to think that god is worth pretending to believe in.

What's next? Why don't you come up with a brand new "god" that we can all freak out about. Or ... And I'm just spitballing here ... How about we stop pretending we all believe in gods. Let's just admit the obvious. Long ago people would invent gods in order to control other people. We don't need that anymore. We have corporations.

Around the world, people would answer that question in many different ways. The bible states: “There are many ‘gods’ and many ‘lords,’” and today the gods worshiped number into the millions. (1 Corinthians 8:5) However, there  is only one God who deserves our worship.

People in the first century—like many today—worshiped “those who are called ‘gods,’ whether in heaven or on earth.” There is actually to us one God the Father,” and “there is one Lord, Jesus Christ.”—1 Corinthians 8:5, 6.

Read "Small Gods" by Terry Pratchett for a quirky insight into how religions develop, how people make gods (and not the other way around).  Great fun too.

Nobody knows if there is even a God at all. Though, I believe there is someone or something higher out there that is watching over us. Who knows, there may be more than one. Guess we'll have to find out until we die. :]
