Do Christians believe they'll be going to hell for Catholic-style child abuse? Or do they not believe in hell?

That is actually SUCH a good question. So many "men of the cloth" in the Catholic Church here in England. Child abusers. Were they REALLY Christians? If not, how did they end up as priests? If they were, then they have to justify their actions to "god" and their conscience.

And then. Why did the Catholic Hierarchy spend 40 years trying to cover the abuse up?

Why are there only half-hearted apologies and never any explanations?

A good question for which there can be no universal answer. Some will believe themselves damned, others think they have a get-out-of-jail-free card. The smart ones realise there's no Hell anyway and that it's all a charade.

HOWEVER, because of the continued cover-up by the Vatican a major inquiry about "institutional child abuse" has been running all this year in Australia. The Catholics may be the main offenders but it's clear that ANY institution attracts it's share of paedophiles.

In the past week they've gotten around to the Jehovah's Witnesses who, since 1950, have covered up more than 1000 cases of child molestation.

Numerically, the Catholics lead the pack and their cover-up and reshuffling of paedophile priests is a highly-refined practice, but the others are just as bad -- as are some non-religious organisations.

It was an article on Australian JW's that sparked my question.

That's not a problem, Aux. They don't accept the others, either. Tit for tat, I guess. :)

First time I've ever seen both the person asking the question and the first two answers posted not know what they are talking about.

Child abuse is universal---there is no "Catholic" child abuse in either civil, criminal, or Canon law.

The existence of Hell is not dependent upon anyone's belief or non-belief in that possible existence.

Hell is open to all who make themselves incapable of entering into the company of God after they die.

But then, since God may or may not exist, I suppose this is all academic to you anyway.

I guess you hope you are right about what you think----otherwise, you will have missed out on so much while on earth.

I agree with Tom Jackson!  There is no "Catholic-style" child abuse.  I assume you mean sexual abuse.  Sadly, adults from parents to teachers to soccer coaches to priests use their position of authority to victimize children.

Here's a major difference I'm pretty sure you don't understand. When evolution makes a "Whoops!" -- which it does, and frequently --> No one is at fault. If this Christian Yahweh character is real, though? A multitude of design flaws and birth defects immediately become "his fault". Africa is his freakin' fault. Auschwitz is his freakin' fault. And this whole child molestation mess is his freakin' fault.

Why worship such a detestable character?

I am not responsible for the fact that you do not have--and apparently refuse to acquire---the necessary level of knowledge to adequately comprehend and discuss these concepts.

When you get into these issues, there is a lower limit on the level of explanation possible to those with limited concepts.

As I gather, Catholicism means universal, hence it's purpose was to unite all religions under one banner, the sacred heart comes from the Aztec god and the Eurcharist comes from Egyptian worship of Isis, Horis and Osiris, the statue of Truth cradles the sun.  Sun worship was linked to a number of sexual rites in Babylonian I'll post a link there are others, which may explain the heinous child abuse. That said child abuse is not synonymous to Catholicism.  Holocaust had an original and sickening meaning as a Jewish practice a reason all were banned from England. As for the Bible it would be very difficult to make head or tail of it. It has been heavily edited as to understand the original concept if there was one.  King James and Francis Bacon had their motives.

Thing is, if none of what religion teaches has any sense, why do our leaders worship Minerva/Athena in the guise of a giant owl? (Bohemian Grove). Why do the freemasons worship the Great Architect? A history that goes back to The knights Templar, one they say that goes back to Solomons temple. The two pillars,  the lesser keys of solomon,  the seal of solomon. Solomon in the bible commanded demons with his ring. This seal is now seen on the Jewish flag held as Davids shield. In the bible it is not named this but the star of Rephiam (molek).  The upsidedown star inside the circle is a symbol of baphomet, a star rightside up is a symbol of a man. In 2002 they changed the republican flag to reverse stars. If medicine wants to depart from religion why use the hermes/cacadeus staff for medicine? Moses used a bronze snake.

See, you do not have to believe in anything, but you better believe they do. They believe in the power of words, theology, technologies (Tesla was ahead of his time), and medicine.  In the Bible it says In the beginning Elohim created the word. Hence life was brought into being with the word of God. This is reflected in what people who believe in magic think.  Alongside masons and buildings came the alchemy of words. Vowels were and are by the Jews and ancients considered most sacred in fact they were never written. Why is it so important to keep changing language? It makes adaptations over time The Great Vowel Shift. Numerology is also important in language. How many of us know Latin? Yet that language is still used in our judicial system, that is why most people do not understand the verbal and non verbal contracts, given that we run by social contract law you would think that important (The Leviathan). "Creator" in Blacks law dictionary means something very different, old "corporate America." They want to keep changing things so we don't remember. In a few years history will look very different, as George Orwell said"He who controls the past controls the future. He who controls the present controls the past. The Age of Enlightenment and reason brought with it the Malthusan catastrophe,  and many of the great scientists including Darwin and his Grandfather and Grandson were part of it.  Bill Gates is for it.  So when you start letting go of "your God given rights," however you wish to define it, you put yourself on par with animals..and you know how we treat animals don't you? See the factory farms and the animal experiments, we already have a large list of human experiments and forced sterilisation.  If you don't think something greater than you or your understanding has you here, then they are more than willing to take that position.

Of course humans give animals their rights hence why they treat them so bloody cruelly. You think you are on par with animals? Pfft, you don't adapt to your environment you adapt your environment to suit you. No other species does that, NONE. As a species we concrete over grass, genetically modify food grains and animals and keep them locked up for the length of the natural born life or plug them for what we can get. No other species does that, they live in harmony with their environment, just as we did did for thousands of years before socalled "civilisation" or better still domestication. Take humans off the planet and life would live in harmony naturally once again. Having intercouse is called reproduction. Reproducing. No human can make another human, they cannot get their hands and materials together and make a spider, a fly or a bird. They can only use synthetics. Like it or not you cannot create. If you trust a human to take care of your natural born self so be it. If you don't respect or tie yourself to the knowledge that something greater and far beyond your understanding got you here then good luck in the hands of your goverment. Because by law, "common law" are your god given (however you wish to define it), rights, give them to your fellow human as you will, most people don't trust their neighbours let alone their governers.

You have some pretty decent points about how destructive humans can be to the planet. This is unfortunate. But it's not enough to set us apart from the animals, nor prove some supernatural causation for our highly developed frontal lobes.

And I've often thought about what would happen if humans relocated the whole of the species to -- say -- HD 219134b. The planet earth would undoubtedly improve, and return to pre-industrial levels of normality. Again. This doesn't mean our evolutionary cousins that would remain on the planet are somehow different from us, or less than us. We are exactly as evolved from the earliest replicating molecules as orangutans are, or jellyfish are, or bacteria are.

And trust me. Knowing that squirrels are no different than us? Doesn't make me think any less of you. Or anyone else. Recognition of equality is a good thing. It does not take away from you.

Well we agree to disagree, I certainly see a major difference between us and animals, they live in harmony with their environment not seek to dominate and control it, nor live beyond their means or torture others species. Humans very different, we clearly think we are better than other species for we use them simply to seek to gain longevity (animal experiments). Funnily enough this only came about several thousand years ago, we went from hunter gatherers to elaborate buildings, sewers, sowing and farming, domesticated grasses and animals, banking systems, then domesticated ourselves. The change in over a few years is swift and ultimately destructive. No other species seeks to create artificial realities because they screwed their own up. Humans appear to not know when enough is enough. If we started on another planet we'd do just the same. We are different, and something happened to our minds back in Sumer. That is evident. I wish you well Novelt :)
