Belief is the personal acceptance of information one holds to be true. It is based off of fact and/or faith.

Here is the literal -

Belief:

1. An acceptance that a statement is true or that something exists.

"his belief in the value of hard work"

•something one accepts as true or real; a firmly held opinion or conviction.

"contrary to popular belief, Aramaic is a living language"

•a religious conviction.

"Christian beliefs"
•2. Trust, faith, or confidence in someone or something.

"a belief in democratic politics"

My Personal preference is number 1 with this added - "1. An acceptance that a statement is true or that something exists based on natural observation and scientific theory."

I believe I'll have the roast beef on rye.

See? It doesn't mean I'm absolutely guaranteed to eat a roast beef on rye. Much could go wrong. The place could suddenly catch on fire and be evacuated before I can even make it through the queue to the cashier. They could be out of roast beef. I could receive a distressing text and have to leave, even after I'd gotten the sandwich but before I'd taken a bite.

Belief takes place in the brain. As does all the rest of human experience.
