The word 'pew' that is used to convey the idea of the bench that is used in church for the people to sit during congregation can trace its origin in the middle English and its origin can focus on its use as such.

The word was derived during the Middle English and the period during which it is derived was the second half of the fourteenth century. The word from which it is derived is 'puwe' and that word can also trace its derivation in the Middle French word 'puie'. The meaning that can be figured out from the word is balcony and as a balcony serves the same purpose for the people to sit, the word is being attributed to the bench that is used to sit in church.
