I am so glad I found a place where lot of muslims love dogs.  I as many of  you believe and insist that dogs and other animals are creation of God.  I am not an expert about Islam but a simple muslim and have asked many times "where in the Quran says we cannot have our furbabies indoors?" I have got answers such : They are dirty, they have parasites, they lick their butts, etc.  Cats are accepted, and God yes I also love them.  But they lick their private areas more than dogs do! So then the answer about a dog licking it does not appeal to me.Cats, specially kittens during the shading process have toxicara, but I have not heard or read anything about it, cats are accepted into muslim homes because our loved prophet liked them.  Thing is our pets depend on us, they cannot get a bath on their own, they cannot brush their teeth, and they cannot clean themselves after doing their business.  We muslims need to have a good heart to take care of them in all ways, we cannot going around saying we are people of faith following Allah's orders if we are not able to respect and love His creation .I do love my dogs,  I have 3, they live indoors, sleep by my side.  When we pray we have to do wudu right? Then what is the problem having our dogs inside? My little ones are adorable, loving, loyal.  I cannot believe how so many people dares to leave these poor creatures outside. If someone having worries about a pet, specially a dog having parasites let me say the following: All pets have to go to the veterinarian and be treated for worms.  Mine are check twice a year and I have never get my little ones with parasites.  Why? Because I take care of them.  I clean them daily as I would clean myself, same as we would all do to a little child.  I got to find a muslim husband who loves dogs.  Ameen

Dear Fellows. I am a Muslim by birth and I am not well versed in Islam but only follow the basic retituals of Islam like prayers etc.I go through different books and answer regarding this question of keeping DOG. I am confused why to put some conditions for owing a dog at home. If prohibited then should not be allowed to keep them if no then there should not be any conditions at all. We have so many examples in our Islamic that Muslim did keep this animal . Finally I owned a Dog , and I think its OK to have an animal at your home. After all its your (human) responsibility to look after the animals on this earth because we are the masters on this earth and responsible too. I am not giving reasons for owning a dog but presenting logic . That animal is animal and you should look after them its our responsibility as a human and as a Muslim. Thanks

I am muslim and I have 2 German Shepherds as a pet. But you can't keep the dog inside the house so I got an insulated dog house and put it in my backyard. I also let the dogs in the warm garage that has carpet on the floor with their beds, food, and fresh water. If you are going to buy a dog and it will be an outside dog don't chain him up! You have to give him a lot of attention. If you are going to put your dog outside then it has to have a big coat.EXAMPLE:Husky,German Shepherd,Alaskan Malamute.I play with my dog like almost the whole day

Thanks for bringing up the request of not chaining up dogs or other animal is so cruel, why a defenseless animal go through such torture under the Sun or freezing temperatures?

I am muslim and I had two little dogs. I think it is perfectly okay to have a dog inside your home. They are loving animals. AND DOGS ARE PEOPLE TOO! You can keep an animal inside your house. It gives you responsibility and you will have a loving friend that will always be there for you.

According to Islam Dogs can be kept in your house if it is for safety and security purpose. Make sure it is not a black one.

About owning a dog
It is important to have all the supplies so the dog is happy and comfortable. If the dog lives outside, he needs a sheltered, warm dog house and he must have access to water and food. I taught on a Indian Reservation and it is terrible how some of the dogs are treated. They are suffering and they are not like a wild wolf or coyote; they need to be cared for.

If a dog lives inside, it will take a lot of patience to train him. He can be trained. You will think, this dog will never learn but he will. I've had many dogs. A puppy will have accidents in the house until he learns how to ask to go outside. Some houses have dog doors so the dog can go out whenever he wants. The dog will usually scratch at the door or bark when he needs to go out and you should reward him when he asks to go out. At first, you will have to take him out every few hours and give him a treat when he goes to the bathroom outside. If he has an accident inside, a stern No is all that is needed and them immediately take him outside.
It's the same with taking dogs for walks; at first they will pull on the leash and want to run. They calm down. Dogs love bribes and little treats help him (tiny little bits of cheese or something he likes).
It's best to have a special bed for him to sleep in and dogs like their dog carriers (and many sleep in them; it is like a den for a dog but you keep the door open for them unless they are puppies and you are training them, then you can keep the dog in the carrier for no longer than 2 hours at a time. For puppies, keeping them in a bathroom at night works too.
The dogs will learn and become very attached to you. Never let a dog sleep on your bed though. It can be tempting but it's not a good idea because in some cases the dog will see you as his equal if he is allowed to sleep on your bed and you are the pack leader, the alpha. It's best to let him have his own bed.

Dogs will wreck things sometimes. To have a dog means not caring so much about material things. So they chewed a pair of shoes or ripped something? You have to see beyond the material. Having pets helps us to see beyond the worldly material things. I knew a woman who got rid of her dog because he chewed a pair of her shoes and I told her it was unkind to value a pair of shoes over a living creature.

Dogs are lovable and they protect the home. Be patient and kind to them and they will be your friend for life. A sharp no and a tap on the nose is all the discipline they need; dogs want to serve and love.

Angels will not visit a house that has dogs in it.  So if you are a true muslim you won't have a dog inside your house. But I know that you can have an 'outdoor' dog.  If you keep it outside then it will not interfere with your religion at all.  I know this for sure. Hope it helped.

Owning a dog as a pet is forbidden in Islam, by all interpretations.

However, having a dog as a working animal is entirely okay, provided that the Muslim takes time to cleanse himself after contact, and especially before prayer.  Working animals would include guard dogs, guide dogs, hunting hounds and shepherding animals.  Muslims in Britiain have recently been urged to practice tolerance when encountering working dogs in society.  It is equally haram to harm a dog except for reasons of self-defence or to protect another person.

Appropriate cleansing steps are to wash one's body or exposed parts of the body seven times, one of which must be with earth and water.  This is fairly demanding, and more than is required than if one comes into contact with pigs, in fact.

I own 2 dogs and they are fine and 1 is a black french bulldog.. They're loving and protect my young kids.. The Dog sleeps in the kids bedroom and you know and he loves the kids and the kids love him..

I personally do not think Allah would have made dogs loyal to humans if he did not want us to look after them..

I also have 2 rabbits and a fish!
