There are a number of things that are commanded of Christian mothers according to the Bible. The Bible says that those whom the Lord blesses to be mothers should take the responsibility seriously and that they have a unique role in their children's lives.

It is also stated that motherhood is not a chore or unpleasant and that "just as a mother bears a child during pregnancy, and just as a mother feeds and cares for a child during infancy, so mothers also play an ongoing role in the lives of their children, whether they are adolescents, teenagers, young adults, or even adults with children of their own."

The role of motherhood will inevitably change although the love, care, nurture and encouragement that a mother gives must be ongoing. We are also told to honour thy father and thy mother throughout the Bible (Exodus 20:12; Deuteronomy 5:16; Matthew 15:4; Mark 7:10; Luke 18:20; Ephesians 6:1). There are numerous other mentions of motherhood throughout the Bible, in Proverbs 31:10-28, "she is worth far more than rubies."

Even at the start of the Bible there is a reference to motherhood, in Genesis 3:20 it states, "Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living."
The Bible says, in John 19:26-27, "When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, "Dear woman, here is your son," and to the disciple, "Here is your mother." From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.
The Bible says that a mother should teach the word of God and make the home a holy place.

The Bible says that children are gifts from God that he decides to give several women. It never says that every woman should be a mother but definitely emphasises that mothers should be serious about their children and fulfill several responsibilities. Mothers, according to the Bible, have a very crucial and matchless role in the lives of their children.

Her role should change with the growth of her children and should be suitable to their benefit and welfare. The Bible also states that a mother should continue to love, nurture, care and encourage her children throughout her and their lives.

Thus the Bible attributes a lot to a mother and believes she has several responsibilities like training, teaching, disciplining, nurturing etc.

The Bible says be fruitful and multiply, so It clearly states every women should be a mother. You may now claim that He was only referring to Adam and Eve. But isn't God's words "law". So indeed it referrers to everyone.

A few verses in particular remind me of motherhood:
  • Proverbs 22:6 (KJV) Train up a child in the way he should go: And when he is old, he will not depart from it.
  • 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV) Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
  • Hebrews 12:11 (NIV)1 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.
  • Proverbs 6:20-23 (NIV) My son, keep your father’s command and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. Bind them always on your heart; fasten them around your neck. When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will  watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you. For this command is a lamp, this teaching is a light, and correction and instruction are the way to life,
  • 1 John 3:18 (NIV) Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.
  • Proverbs 29:17 (NIV) Discipline your children, and they will give you peace; they will bring you the delights you desire.
