Incense is used in many Eastern cultures to drive away evil spirits. It is used on most auspicious occasions to ensure that a new venture is blessed by God. Sage is a fragrant plant which is used for making incense sticks. The aromatic properties of the sage plant have a therapeutic effect on everyone in close proximity. It elicits an emotional response from the people in the house.

Sage makes for great incense because of its oil content, it oxidizes easily and it can be mixed with other compounds. It is low in oil content; as a result it burns easily and does not require too many additives. Most other plants have too much oil and require dry materials to be added to it to burn effectively. The plant has certain natural oxidizers for easy burning. Sage mixes easily with most compounds; this makes it possible to have different flavors of sage incense.

Sage incense may not work for everybody. There are people who may suffer from a burning sensation in their eyes, nose and throat because of it. While choosing incense sticks, it is best to try out different varieties before a making the final purchase.

Many who eschew the burning of incenses and herbs as a cleansing method and think that the only purpose in this tradition is to make dwellings smell nice, have perhaps never smelled sage burning. No one who has smelled the distinct acrid tang of burning sage would say that it could only be for ‘aesthetic’ olfactory purposes.

The Latin for sage, ‘Salvia,’ stems from the word ‘to heal.’ The other qualities of sage when burned, such as giving wisdom, clarity and increasing spiritual awareness, are also indicated in the name. It’s no accident that we refer to wise people as sagely.

The benefits of burning sage can be harnessed very simply by burning sage in your home, office or any other place in need of cleansing.
