Four-leaf clovers have been considered symbols of good luck for so long, and by so many different cultures, that it's difficult to say exactly where it started. Druids, Celts and Christians have all held the four-leaf clover in high esteem at one point or another.
Legend has it that each leaf of a clover represents something different:
Old Irish tradition states that the shamrock, or regular three-leaf clover, represents the Holy Trinity: One for the Father, one for the Son and one for the Holy Spirit. If a shamrock is found with a fourth leaf, this is supposed to represent God's Grace.
The fact that four-leaf clovers are widely thought to bring luck may have something to do with the how unlikely you are to find one. With an estimated 10,000 three-leaf clovers for every one with four leaves, they're pretty rare!
Another legend says that Eve brought a four-leaf clover with her when she was banished from the Garden of Eden.
