It could mean that Gawain is now placing his devotion on Lady Bertilak over the Virgin Mary and he is also a knight for Lady Bertilak instead of the Virgin Mary's knight.

  • The Magic Belt
Lady Bertilak in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight gives Gawain a "magical" belt. Gawain takes the gift from the seductress that changes the course of his future. Before, Gawain was devoted to the Lady Virgin Mary as her knight and devotee, and after the acceptance this changes.

  • Devotion to Lady Bertilak
Gawain becomes devoted to Lady Bertilak by accepting the gift. It also means that he becomes her knight. Since he does become her knight there are overtones that he is also in a love relationship with Lady Bertilak. It is meant to be a courtly love, though it is not usually distinguished between love of the heart.

The belt is first put on before he meets with the Green Knight. The Green Knight is an important character of the story and it is this meeting that changes the future for Gawain. The Green Knight is Bernlak de Hautdesert. He is a giant that has surprisingly visited Camelot during Christmas time. He used magic to assume the gigantic nature of his body.

  • The meet
Sir Gawain is a young knight in Camelot who meets the Green Knight and is suddenly challenged by the knight. The Magical Belt that Gawain is given will help him in his fight against the Green Knight. It helps protect him so that he is able to remain the hero of the book and fight against the Green Knight and survive. In the end Gawain is comforted by the ladies of the court and they wear the green baldric that he won.
