Morena is the name of Goddess in Slavic mythology. She is also known by other names such as Murava and Marzanna. It is believed that she is the deity of harvest and witchcraft. She is also often associated other Goddesses like Hecate and Mara the Goddess of death. Medieval Czech legends describe her as the Goddess of winter and death.
A festival is celebrated in early March in several Slavic countries where straw effigies symbolising winter is either burned or drowned. It is a traditional folk festival in Slovakia and parts of Poland. These are basically celebrations to welcome the spring and bury the winter. Today it is just a simple ceremony though in the earlier times it used to be six or seven day feast and this ritual were conducted on the last day. It had several pagan and religious connotations.
