Some years ago Mrs Didge and I were invited to a pagan festival on the banks of the Nepean River, in western Sydney. Everybody was fully clothed, of course, except two women -- a mother and daughter -- who were skyclad for the occasion.

We had formed a large circle around a central bonfire and they stood on the far side to us, tantalisingly lovely in the firelight.

Do you still need to be told what I think of when you say witch? Two lovely women wearing nothing but their long, blonde hair.

My heart is now beating a little faster than it was before reading your question. Thank you for a pleasant reminder. >:-)

Since I only watched American Horror Story Coven quite recently, the first thing that pops to mind is the characters from that...

But I'm aware that the word "witch" means different things to different people. It certainly has negative connotations in certain contexts, but I guess that could be down to the fact that we live in a society which is still feeling the effects of Abrahamic religions vilifying the faith systems that existed before them maybe?

I think of a Wiccan. I think of a normal person who peacefully worships nature. Probably because my sister is a Wiccan. I don't view witches a the stereotypical, riding on a broomstick, green women. Witches were made to look bad because they were different and didn't follow the religion that the majority wanted them to. So they were ostracized, killed, and forced to hide their beliefs.

Well since theater and pop culture has derived such negative character types . . Those pop into mind first as the imagery (Which in a way is like being indoctrinated about a thing). I try to think of my interacting with Wiccan people in Salem the many times I have gone, and try to picture their faces . . . The original first imagery is black hair and cloak, greenish skin and gnarled fingers . . . Then it goes to happy ethereal-like women. Very earthy in nature, and the smell of insence.
