The zodiac has its roots in ancient history. The Romans adopted astrological concepts from the Greeks, who had taken their ideas from Babylonian astronomy.

Where do the signs of the zodiac come from?
  • The zodiac originated in Babylonian astronomy from about the 1st millennium BC onwards, although it could have been developed even earlier!
  • After the hellenization of Babylonian lands, the Greeks adopted the Babylonians' astronomy and are believed to have introduced the twelve animals to it, leading to it becoming the zodiac.
  • Once the Romans had defeated the Greeks, the zodiac was again passed to a different civilization. The term "zodiac"is derived from Latin, which borrowed from Greek.

The western zodiac has twelve different signs, which correspond to constellations of stars. The zodiac is used to attempt to predict a person's future and character based on the time of year they were born.

The twelve signs of the western zodiac are:
  • Aries (March 21 to April 19).
  • Taurus (April 20 to May 20).
  • Gemini (May 21 to June 21).
  • Cancer (June 22 to July 22).
  • Leo (July 23 to August 22).
  • Virgo (August 23 to September 22).
  • Libra (September 23 to October 23).
  • Scorpio (October 24 to November 22).
  • Sagittarius (November 23 to December 21).
  • Capricorn (December 22 to January 20).
  • Aquarius (January 21 to February 18).
  • Pisces (February 19 to March 20).
