You are best to ask at the church you intend to do the reading at. They will be able to advise you on an appropriate reading to choose and can also give you a lot of tips about how best to address the audience on the day.

If you simply arrange a meeting with one of the heads of the church or even just catch them at the end of a service they will be sure to help you with any issues you are having for the friends and family day at the church.

Like any reading, it is crucial that you are familiar with the text and you should try and learn as much as you can off by heart. You can of course still have the text with you as support, but it is much better to be able to make constant eye contact with your audience rather then having your head face down in a book for the entire reading.

You may also find the library could be a good source for appropriate readings for friends and family day at church. If you head down to your local library and tell the librarian that you are after some books that could be used as a reading for your friends and family day at the church they should be able to point you in the right direction.

It is worth taking a few different texts away with you, just in case you change your mind half way through planning the reading. But as mentioned earlier it is always best to check with the church leaders that your potential reading will be the correct fit for the occasion.
