Hebrews 12:1-2 "Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and sin which doth so easily beset us , and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.  Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God."(KJV)

Okay here is what Paul was saying here when he said we are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, what he means is that the lost people are watching us and that they will do everything in their power to try and make us fall and to find fault in them.  They take it as this for example:  Where I am from they do not believe that a christian should smoke because it does harm to your body which God created.  So if you claim to be a christian and you were in a crowd of ppl that smoked and you were smoking to then you would blend in.  You see a christian is supposed to stand out and be separate and not try to blend in like the heathens do.  Paul was saying lay down every sin cause one you are supposed to give it all to God in the first place and two don't give anybody any room to find fault in you.  When you do this you will be able to run the race of this christian life freely.  For example if you were in a race and you was carring a 100 lb back pack you probably wouldn't win if no one else had a backpack on would you?  So give everything to Jesus don't carry anything else let Jesus bare your burden!!  Also Paul was saying run it with patience don't get upset if you fall down a lot in the begining you will fall down just like you did when you first started to walk but you got back up again and thats what you got to do as a christian.  When Sata knocks you down in the name of Jesus Christ get back up again!!! In verse 2 Jesus began the salvation plan and he will one day come and gather his children home so look to him and be encouraged don't look back there is nothing to look back to!! Remember Lot's wife? When Paul was speaking of the joy that Jesus had while he was enduring the death on the cross, his joy was knowing that you and I and everyone else who is willing to accept him will be saved and will reign with him in heaven one day and not have to go to that awful place called hell!!!  Right now Jesus is sitting on right hand of God the Father and he is daily making intercesion for us meaning that if you are saved and the devil tries to bring up our sins then he looks over at his son Jesus and Jesus says Father they are covered by the blood!!!!HALLEJUAH!!!!

Well I do hope that this helps and if yo need more help just give me a shout!!!

I think witness in the root word in greek for martyr.  Namely people who have given their lives for the Kingdom of God.  Paul is referring to heb. 11.. Hall of faith... They are not watching, witness also has the connotation of recall their testimony... Remember their story..they did it you can do it, is the gist of paul;s message to the jews being persecuted for turning from judaism to christianity.
