Many people believe that a bird tapping at the window is also an omen of impending death to one of the house's occupants. This belief, associating the entry or interest of a bird in the home or its occupants, stems from the ancient belief that birds are actually the messengers of departed souls, or the souls themselves, come back to guide those soon to die.
I tend to look the other way because in mythology, birds could be omens of death or forebearers for important messages. Maybe you'll get some good news.

I have always heard that ONLY when a bird flies into the window that it will mean death to someone close. If they are pecking it can be a warning by someone who is deceased (guardian angel) to beware or keep an eye on things. It could also just be a deceased visitor saying hello.

It is an old Irish superstition that if any (but mostly black) birds pecking at the window, the person who first notices it will die. I have read this over and over in Irish ghost stories and other books involving death omens.

What it probably means is the bird saw itself in the glass as a
reflection and picked a fight with the refraction.

Do you really think that's possible? Aren't they really just flying high enjoying life and maybe looking for some food and a safe place to nap? LOL

It could, depends on what set of myths and legends you believe in. In the Norse religion, if it was a raven, it could have been trying to give you knowledge, some information you need. Or  it could have been tapping at your window because it was trying to open a seed.

Hi Ozziesweet,

No, I think it just means that either the bird is stupid or needs glasses! LOL

We have birds who do that at the kitchen window (at the back of the house) almost every day.  One time, after my loving husband bought me a large bouquet of flowers, it started with three hummingbirds and worked its way up through the ranks to the bigger birds.

I think it's very sweet and funny -- I guess it just goes to show that our windows are clean enough after all!  LOL

Have you seen that commercial with the two wise-guy black birds and the man running into the patio door?

Have a WONDERFUL week!!!

Only when the bird flies into the house is when death is said to happen to someone you are close to. I'm a witness to this, as it happened to someone we were close to.

Birds peck at insects in the corner of windows and windowframes. A spider that is capable of spinning a web within minutes of the windows being cleaned make a tasty treat for the birds.

In my family, birds meant death of a relative...when I was a little kid, we were eating supper & a bird flew by and pecked on the glass;;; a few hours later we got a phone call that one of my mom's favorite aunts had passed away...a few years later my mom was in the yard, raking leaves, and a bird flew in circles a few feet above her head; try as she might, she could not scare it away.....again, another call regarding the passing of a relative.....and one more; my mom moved to a new home after her divorce and one morning looked out to see several blackbirds picking at her grass....at least a dozen or so...later that day, she got word of another family member who had passed!!!.so perhaps it's just in certain families, I don't know; but it sure is true with mine!! Fortunately for me, I"ve had birds lightly peck my apt. Window but no bad news followed; maybe it was just her sensitivity to things like that!!!

One mourning I heard a tapping at the window I went downstairs into the room and I saw a big black bird a raven in the room tapping at the window to get out. I don't know how it got in the window was closed, I opened the window to let it out and I saw an old woman passing by she blessed herself I thought this was strange then my mother shouted down from her bedroom what was the tapping sound it wasn't a big black bird was it I said no it was just a sparrow I didn't wont to worry her I am not superstitious. Let the bird out and a year to that date my mother died of cancer in that very room. Ever since then I do believe in that myth.
