Butterflies start out as caterpillars, which represent naivety and spiritual uncertainty.
Caterpillars are new to the world, so everything is an exploration and an adventure. After a period of eating and growing, they disappear into a cocoon.
The caterpillar phase is a bit like adolescence - you're learning about the world, and preparing for adulthood.
When the insect emerges from the cocoon, it’s a butterfly. Butterflies are beautiful creatures that represent freedom and unlimited possibilities.
In a way, butterflies have a similar spiritual meaning to phoenixes - they have to shut down (death for the phoenix, and cocooning for caterpillars) before emerging as something more beautiful than before.

Although you might not undergo a physical transformation, like the one from ugly duckling to beautiful swan, the butterfly suggests that you’ll undergo a spiritual transformation.
