While a crown of thorns would be
exceedingly painful, the crown of thorns was more about mockery than it
was about pain. Here was the "King of the Jews" being beaten, spit upon,
and insulted by presumably low-level Roman soldiers.
The crown of
thorns was the finalizing of their mockery, taking a symbol of
royalty/majesty, a crown, and turning it into something painful and
degrading.

Because he said he was the son of god (not saying he is or isn't.) He talked a lot about god's kingdom. In a way, they viewed him as thinking he was a king. They mocked him like that. Like, "Here, you think you're a king? Here's a filthy crown for you. Enjoy it."

Roman soldiers, in mockery of Christ’s royal status and probably also to add to his agony, braided a crown of thorns and placed it on Jesus’ head. (Matthew 27:29; Mark 15:17; John 19:2)
