What's to explain?
Religion is man made and delusional. You need evidence to explain something and religion has never had any evidence supporting its extrordanary claims.

The scientology group claim they do explain it with science
I guess they would learn to deal with it.
The churches would all close and the Pope would be unemployed.
The science of Psychology has explained religion, from the clinical standpoint of why we humans observe religions.
Real science is neutral on doctrines of faith; when followers of religion contrive to weave the two together they mostly prove they understand neither and do disservice to both.
Actual scientists know it is preposterous to rationalize one with the other.
Science HAS explained religion.
It is the result of ... People not understanding the natural world around them + a need to belong to a group + a need to control others.
Understanding WHAT makes a person believe in religion is part of the behavioral sciences . . .
There is NO Science that deals with the supernatural claims often attributed to religious texts and therefore, beliefs. Supernatural claims do not fall within the observational standpoint of the natural world science is focused on. If a thing cannot be explained naturally we do not "Fill" the unexplained void with God/Gods . . . We simply form a hypothesis based on the visible/tangible evidence, and move forward with the Scientific method from there.
Although it's not physical and tangible and sometimes based on the observer, many of the social sciences already explain religion. In fact, understanding human beings are a social species would be enough to explain religion. I think if most people knew about it, it wouldn't faze them. They'd just go on with their beliefs because they're human. Nothing to be ashamed of. Every human being has ridiculous beliefs, even those of us who call ourselves atheists.
That will never happen the bible tells us numerous things that science later finds as being true.
Anthropology explains religion best.
The two have very little to do with the other. The bible says at Heb 11:1 "Faith is the assured expectation of what is hoped for, the evident demonstration of realties that are not seen"
We all have the same evidence, but we all use it in different ways. It seems that we all try to find that which would support what we want to believe. In some cases we ignore questions that need to be answered, such as why we were created? Why is there so much suffering in the world? Why do only live to 70 or 80? Why is the bible the most widely circulated book in the world? The list goes on. It seems that some people are not interested in getting the answers to those questions because it takes them down a road that they don't want to travel.
Science cannot nor will ever be able to explain why people choose to be religious, because science does not except that we have a Creator and that he created us with a desire to worship, and some have used that desire to worship other things, money, movie stars, rock stars, etc.
Many of the great scientists believed in a creator. They studied the universe and saw that it had laws. Many of the great scientists did not take credit for their works but handed them to dreams, spirits and demons.

A spirit told Descartes about analytical geometry, he also had an evil demon.
Russel Wallace co-discoverer of The Evolution theory, believed God had interferred in life 3 times. The final time was to give man a mind far greater than the animal. From this social darwinism sprung, that it wasn't just the fittest that survived, but the most civilised. He believed that the mind was of a higher being.
Carl Jung believed the ID, the shadow was a demon archetype. He had his famous red book where he kept all his beliefs and was visited by a winged man. "I don’t envy you your task in writing about these things. I hope you will succeed in presenting my ideas in such a way that people won’t find them too strange. Unfortunately it is my fate that other people, especially those who are themselves possessed by demons, think me mad because I believe in these powers. But that is their affair; I know they exist. There are demons all right, as sure as there is a Buchenwald."
Bear in mind this man is one of the fathers of psychology, the model of which on other's are judged. There have also been many scientific inventions that were dreamt.
Look at Aliester Crowley's influence on the music industry, he was a satanist and claimed to be the beast himself. Witchcraft "the craft" has been a belief in many avenues, the power of words have always held a position with the occult because in the bible "God spoke the word into existence." There have been many experiments that vibration affects man. Look at the effect of radiation waves, microwaves, radio waves. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TCZ155wj74U
This has a history as far back as civilisation, when the first people settled and domesticated animals and grass. Why did they do this? To settle and sow crop leaves it open to dominance. Then whoever controls the food source controls the people ie enslavement. The more we breed the more slaves. The poorer the food source the greater the disease and poverty. Then it results in rape of the land and the issue of reducing the population to try and balance things. The Malthusianism catastrophe and eugenics. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gROhNaJoGzI
The freemasons and other secret societies have a history that reaches back. The freemasons believe in the two pillars of Jabal and Jebel. The twin pillars of solomons temple. Solomon in the bible also controlled demons "lesser keys of solomon" this goes back to ancient Egypt. The reason for pyramid signs in witchcraft is for manifestation. The 3D triangle is the first shape to manifest. Abel sacrificed a lamb because he was showing God the original sin was in the blood. The bloodlines. Cain only giving God his fruits did not show his understanding. This is where these beliefs come from. Cain was the first builder, he went a built a city in the land of Nod. Funny because to us the land of Nod would be sleep. Oddly many songs sing about dreams, stars, being something greater anything which takes us away from our reality. So the Freemasons hold Cain in high regard. Because Cain killed Abel he was never allowed to own land only build on it.
Albert Pike "We shall unleash the Nihilists and the atheists, and we shall provoke a formidable social cataclysm which in all its horror will show clearly to the nations the effect of absolute atheism, origin of savagery and of the most bloody turmoil. Then everywhere, the citizens, obliged to defend themselves against the world minority of revolutionaries, will exterminate those destroyers of civilization, and the multitude, disillusioned with Christianity, whose deistic spirits will from that moment be without compass or direction, anxious for an ideal, but without knowing where to render its adoration, will receive the true light through the universal manifestation of the pure doctrine of Lucifer, brought finally out in the public view. This manifestation will result from the general reactionary movement which will follow the destruction of Christianity and atheism, both conquered and exterminated at the same time."
See the freethinkers believed in "Do as thy wilt" and the satanists believe the same.
Mind control has a long history, it has been used in warfare, in interrogation, and in controlling the populus. Taming and domesticating us, even making us dumb and fearful.
We are all ignorant; just about different things.”-Mark Twain
“All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent.”-Thomas Jefferson
“Governments do not govern, but merely control the machinery of government, being themselves controlled by the hidden hand.”– Benjamin Disraelie
Therefore is no such thing in America as an independent press. You know it and I know it… The business of the Journalist is to destroy truth; To lie outright; To pervert; To vilify; To fawn at the feet of mammon, and to sell his county and his race for his daily bread.– John Swinton, newsman and former editor at The New York Times
“If we understand the mechanism and motives of the group mind, it is now possible to control and regiment the masses according to our will without their knowing it.”— Edward L. Bernays, the nephew of Sigmund Freud who studied his uncle’s work.
“We must now face the harsh truth that the objectives of communism are being steadily advanced because many of us do not recognize the means used to advance them. … The individual is handicapped by coming face to face with a Conspiracy so monstrous he cannot believe it exists. The American mind simply has not come to a realization of the evil which has been introduced into our midst.”— J. Edgar Hoover (Elks Magazine, August 1956.)
“A holy war will now begin on America, and when it is ended America will be supposedly the citadel of freedom, but her millions will unknowingly be loyal subjects to the Crown. Your churches will be used to teach the Jew’s religion and in less than two hundred years the whole nation will be working for divine world government. That government that they believe to be divine will be the British Empire. All religions will be permeated with Judaism without even being noticed by the masses, and they will all be under the invisible all-seeing eye of the Grand Architect of Freemasonry.”— British General Charles Cornwallis to General George Washington
“The man who reads nothing at all is better educated than the man who reads nothing but newspapers.”— Thomas Jefferson
“It’s not the votes that count, it’s who counts the votes.”— Josef Stalin —
“There will be in the next generation or so a pharmacological method of making people love their servitude and producing dictatorship without tears so to speak. Producing a kind of painless concentration camp for entire societies so that people will in fact have their liberties taken away from them, but will rather enjoy it, because they will be distracted from any desire to rebel by propaganda, or brainwashing, or brainwashing enhanced by pharmacological methods. And this seems to be the final revolution.”— Aldous Huxley, Tavistock Group, California Medical School, 1961
“We are in a process of developing a whole series of techniques which will enable the controlling oligarchy to get people to actually love their servitude. A really efficient totalitarian state would be one in which the all-powerful executive of political bosses and their army of managers control a population of slaves who do not have to be coerced, because they love their servitude. To make them love it is the task assigned, in present-day totalitarian states, to ministries of propaganda, newspaper editors, and school teachers….The greatest triumphs of propaganda have been accomplished, not by doing something, but by refraining from doing. Great is truth, but still greater, from a practical point of view, is silence about truth.”–Aldous Huxley who wrote Brave New World (Grandson to Thomas Huxley "Darwins Bulldog." Darwins grandfather was a freemason his grandson president of eugenics for 6 years.
“Why of course the people don’t want war. Why should some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? Naturally, the common people don’t want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But after all it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship … Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger.”— Leading Nazi leader, Hermann Goering, at the Nuremberg Trials before he was sentenced to death
“Our job is to give people not what they want, but what we decide they ought to have.”— Richard Salent, Former President CBS News.
“One cannot wage war under present conditions without the support of public opinion, which is tremendously molded by the press and other forms of propaganda.”— General Douglas MacArthur
“If you give a man the correct information for seven years, he may believe the incorrect information on the first day of the eighth year when it is necessary, from your point of view, that he should do so. Your first job is to build the credibility and the authenticity of your propaganda, and persuade the enemy to trust you although you are his enemy.”— A Psychological Warfare Casebook Operations Research Office
“The first casualty of war is truth.”–Rudyard Kipling
“Today Americans would be outraged if U.N. Troops entered Los Angeles to restore order; tomorrow they will be grateful. This is especially true if they were told there was an outside threat from beyond, whether real or promulgated, that threatened our very existence. It is then that all peoples of the world will plead with world leaders to deliver them from this evil. The one thing every man fears is the unknown. When presented with this scenario, individual rights will be willingly relinquished for the guarantee of their well being granted to them by their world government.”— Henry Kissinger speaking at Evian, France, May 21, 1992 Bilderburgers meeting.
“People only see what they are prepared to see.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson (where's Waldo?)
“The high office of President has been used to foment a plot to destroy the American’s freedom, and before I leave office I must inform the citizen of his plight.”–John F. Kennedy, at Columbia University, 10 days before his assassination.
“It is also important for the State to inculcate in its subjects an aversion to any ‘conspiracy theory of history;’ for a search for ‘conspiracies’ means a search for motives and an attribution of responsibility for historical misdeeds.”–Murray N. Rothbard, in The Anatomy of the State
“The secret to success is to own nothing, but control everything.”–Nelson Rockefeller
"If we were merely dealing with the law of averages, half of the events affecting our nation’s well-being should be good for America. If we were dealing with mere incompetence, our leaders should occasionally make a mistake in our favor. We . . . Are not dealing with coincidence or stupidity, but with planning and brilliance.”–Gary Allen, from his book None Dare Call It Conspiracy
"In politics, nothing happens by accident. If it happens, you can bet it was planned that way.” –Franklin D. Roosevelt
We have, in this country, one of the most corrupt institutions the world has ever known. I refer to the Federal Reserve Board. This evil institution has impoverished the people of the United States and has practically bankrupted our government. It has done this through the corrupt practices of the moneyed vultures who control it”.— Congressman Louis T. McFadden in 1932
“I care not what puppet is placed on the throne of England to rule the Empire, … The man that controls Britain’s money supply controls the British Empire. And I control the money supply.”–Baron Nathan Mayer de Rothschild (1777-1836)
“I am a most unhappy man. I have unwittingly ruined my country. A great industrial nation is controlled by its system of credit. Our system of credit is concentrated. The growth of the nation, therefore, and all our activities are in the hands of a few men. We have come to be one of the worst ruled, one of the most completely controlled and dominated Governments in the civilized world – no longer a Government by free opinion, no longer a Government by conviction and the vote of the majority, but a Government by the opinion and duress of a small group of dominant men.”–President Woodrow Wilson
“If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and the corporations which grow up around them will deprive the people of all property until their children wake up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.”— Thomas Jefferson
