... Would that mean they also believe anybody who is unconscious, lacks a soul?

A bit like a computer in sleep mode. ;-)

So while we sleep, that spark that fires across the neurons is still at work . . . once the spark ceases, so to, does the mind. Should we be able to come back from being "Brain Dead" if oxygen isn't fully restored via blood flow, we can suffer brain damage (Sort of a bad sector of a Hard Drive) . . those memories or experiences might be lost to us unless new neuron pathways can be routed to it . . . If Brain damage happens in such a way as to affect our emotion centers, chemical flow, and the like, what then . . are we a different person? Maybe we WERE easy going and calm . . now always angry and belligerent . . . If this is indeed the soul, what becomes of it during these changes?

If I get brain damage I've left instructions that I'm not to be resuscitated. If I can't be me I don't want to be anybody.

To me its just a culmination of one's lifelong decisions, thoughts, and beliefs. Its like a memory card for a computer. Its not who you are physically but who you are mentally. Its basically the brain as Tyto said above. It's just the brain.

So, since you have a Christian base, are you thinking the Consciousness downloads to new body, or is the old body rebuilt around it . . . or would we remain as just the spark that carries our consciousness?

honestly..and this is a boring reply from me...I have no idea. I don't think you get a body after you die. If I was forced to guess I'd say that only your memories survive.

A kind of mental image of ourselves might exist after death but I doubt we get a human-body after death.

It's something I've wrestled with from time to time. That elusive essence that makes us who we are, that consciousness, is hard to pinpoint. So is the concept of "soul". To me they're just two words to describe the same thing. One has a plain Jane connotation, the other a more poetic, romantic, religious meaning.

Whether or not we believe in a soul, the terms are conveniently interchangeable. And, of course, that opens the door to other fascinating questions. :)

Soul, consciousness, mind, intellect----It would be nice if we could be more precise, but our understanding is just not there yet.

It remains one of the unknowables, Tom. But it's fun to speculate. It can even be rewarding.
