The history of religion in Australia is an interesting story. There was no specific religion in Australia until around 1788 when explorers, fishermen and shipwreck survivors began to inroduce various religious traditions. Among these people were Irish Catholic and Anglican convicts who introduced their religions. Later came Methodists, Muslim sailors and prisoners and Afghan cameleers who settled in Australia. In the 1800s there were Catholics, Anglicans, Methodists, Presbyterian, Congregationalists, and Baptist churches. Later came Lutherans more Muslims, Buddists along with many more Christian denomonations. Today the breakdown is 26.4%Catholics, 20.5% Anglicans,20.5% other Christians, 1.9%, Buddists 1.5%, Muslim.

The 1990 cnesus shows the folowing breakdown of church memberships. Christianity includes all Christian religions:
Christian denominations 12,575, 675 million
Non religious/Agnostic 2, 948, 891million
Unknown 1,749, 363 million
Islam 202,925 thousand
Buddhism 199, 812 thousand
Australian Aboriginal Traditional Religion is only 6, 356
