David was the youngest of eight brothers. He looked after his father's sheep at Bethlehem during the period of the war between Israelis and Philistines. At that time, King Saul was the king of Israel. David's father had sent him to take food for the Israelites. On the other hand, Goliath (the great giant) had challenged Israelites to send someone to fight him, on the basis of which he will decide as to who will get the fruits of victory. It was a daring challenge and no one had the chutzpah to accept it. Nevertheless at a young age, David went for the challenge, after succeeding in persuading King Saul to let him go to the Goliath. After all it was a matchless contest as David was very young as compared to the gargantuan and dangerous Goliath. After a vigorous and toe-curling fight, David succeeded in killing the Goliath. As a result, the Philistines fled, pursued by the victorious Israelites.
