Face Squarely: What is important is the way you face your client. This will convey the message that you are trying to get across. Your body must be turned a little away from the person you are talking to but your face must be directly towards them. This is to ensure that the person does not feel threatened or intimidated.

Keep An Open Posture: Crossed legs and arms might send a negative message to the person you are talking to. However, if you keep an open posture then the person you are talking to will feel more comfortable talking to you and this will send a positive message.

Lean: You must lean towards the person so they know that you are taking an interest in what they have to say. This also shows that you are involved in the conversation.

Use good eye contact: Maintaining a good eye contact with a client ensures to them that you are listening. Lack of eye contact could give a negative message and the client will feel uncomfortable talking to you as they will believe that you are not listening or are distracted.

Be relaxed: Egan argues that it is important not to fidget, and it is important to feel comfortable and relaxed with your own behaviour. If you are relaxed then the person you are talking to will feel more relaxed and comfortable too.

SOLER means:
S- face squarely Adapt a bodily position that indicates involvement with the client. A desk between you may create a psychological barrier between you that is not advised. It is important that you convey the message that you are involved with the client. If the square positioning is too threatening then a more angular position may be suitable. The point is the quality of your attention.

O- Open posture Crossed arms and legs can be seen as not willing to involve yourself with the client and that you aren't availability to talk. Open posture suggests that you wan to know what the client has to say and that you are involved in their needs.

L- Lean People should lean towards the client to show they involved with the conversation. The client should see this as you being interested in them and you being with them.

E- Eye contact Eye contact with the client shows you are interested in them, steady eye contact is seen as being in deep conversation within a North American cultural context.

R- Be relaxed Egan feels that it is important not to fidget and to be comfortable and relaxed with non verbal behaviour. If you do these things the client may begin to wonder if they are making you nervous. Being relaxed makes you more comfortable with using your body as a vehicle of personal contact.

SOLER is another theory of communication based on the body language during communication that Gerald Egan developed in his book “The Skilled Helper”. In his book he recommended that by using an acronym to help build all the components into communication with others. The acronym he came up with was SOLER, this stands for; sitting attentively at an angle, open posture, leaning forward, eye contact and relaxed body language. (1) Egan argued that there are some small skills that can help to create a sense of caring and involvement when communicating with another person.

S: Sit SQUARELY on to the client, preferably at a 5 o’clock position to avoid the possibility of staring.
O: Maintain an OPEN posture at all times, not crossing your arms or legs which can appear defensive.
L: LEAN slightly in towards the client.
E: Maintain EYE CONTACT with the client without staring.
R: RELAX. This should in turn help the client to relax.
