When his 11 brothers went to Egypt for grain during a famine, Joseph was the official who made decisions regarding them. He recognized them but did not tell them. He called them spies and framed them for thievery and kept Simeon as hostage until they returned with their young brother, Benjamin. They begged him not to require that they bring him lest their elderly father could die of sorrow. He would not change his mind.
He had framed them and kept Simeon in Egypt so that he could be sure that they would return with Benjamin because he wanted to meet his little brother who had replaced him after Joseph had supposedly been killed.
Ten of the brothers returned to their father and explained to their father who, in sadness, decided that they could take Benjamin so Simeon could be released.
After they arrived there with Benjamin, Joseph surprised them and prepared a full meal for them for reasons they could not understand. It was because Joseph wanted to see his brother that had the same mother as he did.
When Joseph, their brother whom they had sold to a camel caravan that sold him as a slave, he saw Benjamin; he was overcome with emotion, left the room and wept. Then to regain control, he washed his face and returned to them, fed them and sent them on their way to Egypt.
For his own personal reasons, he had the worker place their money brought for payment, and then told them to put his own silver cup in the Benjamin's sack. Later it was found and Joseph told them to leave Benjamin and return to their father. The 11 brothers begged him to keep them in Egypt instead because, they told him, their elderly father might die of sadness.
By then Joseph could not control himself, so he left immediately to go to another room where he wept so loud that others heard him cry. When he returned to them, he told them who he was and that they should not be angry at themselves for his being in Egypt because "God sent me here to prepare the way to…keep you alive."
