Venus flytraps are believed to have originated in South America and it is still unknown when they originated, or how they began to grow wildly in North America. They eat bugs not because they are from outer space, but because the environment that they live in is extremely poor in nitrogen. When they eat bugs they end up getting a rich supply of nutrients that they can't get in the soil. If you know anything about botany than you should know that nitrogen is critical for a plant to survive. So that is why they are carnivorous.

I searched online and could find no solid evidence; I did find this in the book that turned me on to the whole idea, "Strange Creatures From Time and Space”. by John A. Keel.

The famous Venus's-fllytrap, a bug-consuming plant, has been found growing naturally in only one spot on the earth. That spot is an ancient meteor crater in North Carolina. Colonial Governor Arthur Dobbs discovered the flytrap in 1760, and there has been much speculation since then that the plant was somehow introduced to our world by a crashing meteor.

The copyright on the book is 1970 with some of the articles dating back to the late 60’s, so the idea is little older then some internet hoax.

The Venus flytrap is a carnivorous herb, nothing more. It is not the only carnivorous plant. There are several hundred species of such plants. They are not forms of alien life like Audrey II in Little Shop of Horrors, nor do they grow into giants like the one in the Addams Family.

I very highly doubt it. It can be found growing around Wilmington, North Carolina, USA. Not exactly sure though you got me thinking... Don't think it'll be answered in our lifetime

I believe that the Venus Flytrap is found natively in North and South Carolina, within about a one hundred mile radius of Wilmington, North Carolina. It thrives in very nitrogen poor soil.

Well, they do grow around supposed crater sites. And, they originally only grew in N/S Carolina. They still can't explain the closing of the trap.. They only have theories..
And, some carnivorous plants don't properly follow the stem, root, leaf pattern like most plants..
So, who knows?
