You must realize, that when studding history, you have to include the accepted way of life and the accepted religion of the time you are studding. Do not look at it from todays accepted point of view. Try to put yourself in that ancient mode. Both society and religion (and for much they were one) Almost all land owners who were in business to sell what they grew, were slave-owners and drinkers. Not just the US but around the world. Life was very different.

True but not as different as one might think. Men of yesterday don't think as differently as men of yesterday. As much as they'd hate to admit it....men of today wouldn't be too against slavery if they could afford it. I mean the idea of somebody working their butts of to our every whim! That's fantasy right there

As an American, I never heard of such a discussion so the reason of discussion would be also unknown to me, but I can guess, some people like to make a big deal out of everything & connect every unrelated spot to another unrelated one. Besides, to me it wouldn't really be matter. The discussion is waste of time, cause nothing will change in aspect of our founding fathers & what they've done. Those beliefs are personal beliefs & it varies for each, those Atheist & Christians are totally wasting their lives over such a useless topic, because regardless which side the founding fathers been.

The first of commitment of the United States of America is "Freedom of belief & freedom of choice" so the result of their discussion wouldn't make any differences.

Well, for a VERY long time, Atheist have been quiet and sit in the background. With every generation, more and more indoctrination of children with religious beliefs were also peppered with lies that our Founding Fathers, were ALL Christians and they had intended that our Nation be Christian based as well. This is not only historically inaccurate, but sets the stage for Public government funded systems to be more Christian based and less secular as our forefathers REALLY intended.

It is only now that Atheist have more of a voice, that we start to use it, and Theists are liking this new "Backbone".

True! My Church has this image of the founding fathers as being Jesus-lovin super Muricans when in reality they were almost all rich, slave owning Englishmen!

Don't get me wrong, most of them believed in some higher power, but they were Deists in this respect. Only one of them was a devout religious man . . the others were far from it.

I think of Jefferson when you say that. I mean he's so secular that he literally cut up a Bible so that the spiritual parts could be left out
