As a part of modern society, I think I can answer your question by asking one of my own. What's Dalai Lama?

The 14th Dalai Lama /ˈdɑːlaɪ ˈlɑːmə/, /ˌdælaɪ ˈlɑːmə/ is the current Dalai Lama. Dalai Lamas are important monks of the Gelug school, the newest school of Tibetan Buddhism which is nominally headed by the Ganden Tripas

Dear Esther Watson,

Yes, his message is relevant, incomparably so.

His Holiness is a wonderful messenger beyond time, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize 1989, he lives his message of non-violence.

Nope ... No more than any other celebrity, politician, or religious leader.

Well - maybe they are relevant to the global warming situation, as they are all full of hot air.  HA!

Yes, but not so much Western society. If you were Chinese, a Buddhist, or a student of philosophy, the Dalai Lama would have more significance to you and your views.

That the Dalai Lama lives a thoughtful life, is of pious character, and is so grounded in his peaceful beliefs, would be sufficient to convince me of how relevant he should be. He is also a noted humanitarian, teacher and Nobel Laureate, quite the example for others.

I would recommend you Google the current, 14th Dalai Lama. He's quite a fascinating fellow.
