Desperation, loneliness and peer pressure.
Often it due to the Chaplin. The Chaplin is a person that prisoners can talk to in confidence. This may lead to a want of turning their life around or being forgiven. I also know members of Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous go into prisons, and their programme is based on a belief in a higher power.
However, on the flip side many prisoner's find drugs in prison and pick up tips on commiting further crimes.
Despair, I should think, Otis.
Religion is also used as a ploy by some to persuade parole boards that they were safe to let out into society.
David Berkowitz (Son of Sam) who "found God" in prison and now helps out with chapel services and counselling has applied for parole 15 times without success. He continues to work toward his release and likes to tell the parole board that he "has really done wonderful".
I would think it would be easy to find God if I had nothing better to do but sit in a cell and hear myself think. Over time I might think I hear God, because that has to be who it is because I have very little brain input going in. Besides finding God would be hella easy in jail. I'd be forgiven by all for my sins and I could look at myself in the mirror. Finding God would also keep me from using my bed sheets to hang myself too. A win win.
God gives hope. In the Christian faith, if you royally screw this life up, you can still find a better life after death. You just have to repent.
Poor coping and the old "Dog and Pony Show" for early release.
A lot of addictive personalities are based 50% in genetics . . . The other part of this equation would be the ability to cope or not to cope. Many people who end up in prison have had bad childhoods, and poor role models. Relying on "Outside Stimuli" to address inward turmoil is both a lesson in poor coping skills and an easy no fault solution. Religion can fill this void where alcohol or drugs might been used. Since there is (Currently) still a large percentage of America that is religious then the community acceptance and support is also a reason for those with poor coping skills to find it alluring.
I would assume this also looks rather good to a review board looking at the prison population and individuals, therein; to be "reformed".
One possible explanation:Â Less distractions make the Hound of Heaven harder to ignore.
Because sometimes it takes us to hit rock bottom first.
Why do people suddenly find god in jail and prisons??
==============================================
Maybe because man put God in there first so that man could
seize power and authority over fellow men.
They find God when they get booked, But forget about him when they are released! New, first time inmates do it of fear. Both the new guy and the multiple offenders use the I found God statement to gain favor with the parole officer, or judge! Never works, been there heard it too many times!
