The word Judaism is the name of a monotheist faith of the Jewish people. The word comes from the Middle English word "Iudaisme" taken from the Old French "Judaisme", this in turn from the Late Latin word "Iudaismus" derived from the Greek word "Ioudaismos" meaning Jew.

The Jews are believed to be the descendants of the ancient Hebrew people, followers of the teachings of Abraham. The religion according to the Jews is based on a covenant between the prophet Abraham and God. This event is believed to date back to nearly 2000 BCE. The other major saviour of the Jews from bondage in Egypt was the prophet Moses who renewed God's covenant to the Jews. The core monotheist belief of the Jews is that there is a single, omnipotent, omniscient, transcendent and omni benevolent God.
