In some mythological accounts Thanatos was represented as a grim character with a fierce appearance, wielding a sword and terrible to behold. He was marked with cruelty and his appearance signified grief, pain and suffering. Some Roman sarcophagi depicted him as a mellow figure, like a gentle wee lad. The Character Death of the Endless from Neil Gaiman's Sandman series was loosely based on Thanatos, with the difference being that he depicted Death as a fun loving Gothic female who is gentle with the souls she collects and is always vivacious and fun loving.
