Which Actors Have Played Jesus On The Screen?

Jeffrey Hunter played Jesus in the movie "King of Kings", and Jim Caviezel was Jesus in Mel Gibson's controversial film "The Passion of the Christ".

The best by far is Max Von Sydow.  Magnificent, and moving.  The best thing is the film "The Greatest Story Ever Told."

Max Von Sydow played the part in the star-studded production, 'The Greatest Story Ever Told', (to give you an idea of how star-studded that film was, John Wayne has a two-minute part as the centurion who asks Jesus to heal his daughter.)

Most recently, Jim Caviezel starred in Mel Gibson's 'The Passion of the Christ.'

Epictetus mentioned 'Jesus Christ Superstar.' I would also mention 'Godspell', which starred Victor Garber as the Jesus character. (Yes, this is the same Victor Garber who played Jennifer Garner's dad in 'Alias', the engineer in Titanic' and the boo-hiss lawyer in the first 'Legally Blond' movie. Garber is a very accomplished stage musical performer.)

It's big shoes to fill for any actor playing the character, so who are the famous Jesus impersonators?

Willem Dafoe, member of the experimental theatre group, The Wooster Group, played Jesus in Martin Scorcese's version of the The Last Temptation of Christ.

Ted Neely, my favourite Jesus ever, sweet cross eyed singing Jesus, the actor who played Jesus in the movie of the musical Jesus Christ Superstar.

British actor Robert Powell was cast in the hugely popular and high profile American t.v mini-series 'Jesus of Nazereth' (as if there was a Jesus of Peckham).

Of course, not quite as high profile in that way, but still very popular, Matt Stone, co-creator of South Park, has played Jesus on their show for many years, the kind of Jesus, I'd like to meet, with his own show on cable, sounds like a great guy to me.
