Newman as a last name is found among people of various religions including the Jewish faith. World Famous Academy Award winning actor Paul Newman is of Jewish descent. The name means a newcomer in any walk of life and is of Old English origin.
Its variant forms include Neumann and Newsy.

I am a Newman and I get asked from time to time if I'm Jewish.  When I tell them that I aint, they look surprised.  I find that rather strange since their surname could mean some trade, so should I also be shocked that they are not mill workers.  Of course not since I understand what century we are living some people do not.

My last name is Newman and it was originally Neumann.  My father was German/Jew.  I don't know that it's related to the religion as much as the genetic origin of our ancestors.

Maybe hundreds of years ago people associated names with religion.  Over time its clear to see that names are now borrowed from all different parts of the world.  I'm also a Newman but I am not Jewish nor any religious faith.

Its another simple stereotype which has been proven wrong over and over again.  If people can't grasp the basic understanding that a planet can only sustain a limited amount of people how can we expect people to understand that a person's name is just that and nothing else.
