Zakah is almsgiving (charity) of which 2.5% of their yearly income is given to charities. It's important because it shows to Allah that you do not consider yourself above everybody else. It also strengthens the Ummah (worldwide family of muslims) which is very important to them. Hope this helps :)

Zakat is an obligatory act of worship and is also the third pillar of Islam. Allah Almighty said: “And perform As-Salat, and give Zakah”(An- Nur: 56).
