It is conveying an ancient, regional perception about doom and nature the writers of that time lacked the information to understand. Essentially, it's baleful misinformation crafted to prop up the Judeo-Christian agenda.
The end of mankind. The Bible is a good read but it's completely man made and full of fear inducing crap.
Jesus likened “the end of the world” to what happened at the time of the global Flood in Noah’s day. (Matthew 24:37-39) At that time it was not the earth itself that was destroyed. Rather, it was ungodly humans. Because of the shocking behavior of the people living back then, God said: “I am going to wipe men whom I have created off the surface of the ground.” (Genesis 6:7) Likewise, the apostle Peter spoke of the ancient “world of ungodly people” that was destroyed back in Noah’s time. It was not planet Earth that perished. (2 Peter 2:5) Thus the world that the Bible so definitely says will be destroyed is the world of mankind that is not doing the will of God. “As for the wicked, they will be cut off from the earth. And the treacherous will be torn away from it.” (Proverbs 2:22)
You may not realize how scary life used to be. Back when people wrote down all this stuff about religion, they were scared to death almost all the time.
Of course it seemed like everything would be ending soon. They couldn't even count on finding food next season.
And if it seems to humans like everything will end, then it will seem to the gods like everything will end.
God will create a new heaven and a new earth and make it like He wants it to be. All things will be made new.
It was created as a sense of "Urgency" to embrace the belief in God. The ever looming hand of apocalypse was needed to drive those away from logic and reason and into the arms of myth and miracles.
