How can people understand why Egyptians prayed to a crocodile god, and still think their own concept of a deity has any viability?

Every religion and civilization has it's own god or gods. Anyone that believes theirs is the "only true god" is living in a dream world. It's called faith for a reason, faith in the god that one believes in. If your faith and belief in the crocodile god leads you to a life of kindness, sharing and love towards others, then by all means, worship your crocodile god.

Next..................try licking your eyebrows or try touching your elbow to your eyebrows. If you can lick your eyebrow and elbow while touching your elbow to your eyebrow, YOU are my new god.

THAT'S what Jesus must have done to convince everyone. Here I was thinking he just made the Ace of Spades disappear...

Simple, they dismiss it as "Myth" but hold onto their own supernatural beliefs as "Truth".

Most will disregard the toils of Hercules and totally believe in the story of Samson... They do not understand that they too, embrace a myth just as grand.

The crocodile god wasn't just synonymous with Egyptians it is seen the world over, as is Egyptian sun worship. In some of England's grave yards people are buried in tomb like structures, you will see IHS and the all seeing eye above, this is the trinity of Isis, Horus, and Osirius you also have the Sirius stars. Also Gothic and Great churches their god was odin again symbolism of one eye.  In the bible it says to have no deity before me. It also speaks of the evil eye.

We still use it today, "she is giving him evils." So obviously this god believed in others. The Israelite God was trying to restore order with his own people from the pagan practices. Such as mixing bloodlines which is where the metaphor of wearing different fabrics came in, it is was showing an outward understanding of this rule. As was not consuming the blood of an animal it was a sign to show to their God that the sin was in the blood, life is in the blood.

In Eden they were vegetarian, wickedness entered the world when they "fell" from grace by disobeying God. Hence the wheat from the tares, they are allowed to grow together because to remove the tares would kill the wheat, so they wait till the day of harvest. The bible says the world is controlled by the wicked one. God wants people to return at will just as they turned away at will. The Israelites often turned to Moloch/Rempham/Chiun.  Who were Gods of the Rephaim race.

It doesn't bother me more that people believe in god than it does when the government manipulates the populace. But it does also bother me.

Would it bother you if you lived in the third world?

Would living in the 3rd world bother me? Or would people believing in god while we both live in the 3rd world bother me?

In answer to the first, I often muse how I and everyone else who live in the developed nations of the world, won the genetic lottery when it comes to where we were born. No doubt. But I wouldn't have my 1st world privilege had I been born somewhere else. It would probably seem pretty normal. Awful, sure. But normal.

In answer to the second, I cannot imagine how it would be different just because we both lived in a 3rd world country. I have to imagine I would still have a tendency towards the scientific, always wanting to know more. I bet I'd still be atheist. Maybe in the third world I wouldn't have access to so much information though. Who knows.

The first question makes more sense, and I think that's why my first answer seems to make more sense.

A lack of knowledge from the bible can cause people to believe and pray to all sorts of things, here are some scriptures that shows the futility of it at Psalms 115:3-8, " Our God is in the heavens; He does whatever he pleases. Their idols are silver and gold, The work of human hands, A mouth they have but they cannot speak; Eyes, but cannot see; Ears they have, but they cannot hear;  A nose, but they cannot smell; Hands they have, but they cannot feel; Feet, but they cannot walk; they make no sound with their throat.  The people that make them will become just like them. As will all those who trust in them."
