It is alleged that Joel Osteen is a member of a movement called the Word of Faith movement. This movement has been severely criticised by many members and organisations in the Christian community.
In the year 2005, Osteen appeared on a broadcast of television presenter Larry King's talk show entitled Larry King Live. In that episode, he said that Jesus Christ was not the only way to get to Heaven. He is believed to have told King that 'only God can look at somebody's heart'.
He then clarified his previous statement on another episode of the same talk show in which he is believed to have said that a personal relationship with Christ was the only way to get to Heaven. He said he chose to teach people about God's goodness and not about sin.
