This religion or teaching is said to be Hebraic or Jewish in it's origins and has different spellings, for example, cabala, Kaballah, Kabala.

The teachings date back to the beginnings of Hebrew teachings, and some even say, Egyptian, and Greek origins, teach the principle that each person receives a teaching or personal wisdom, that is unique to him or her. Then the responsibility is to carry out, or live out, this received wisdom.

The followers of this teaching wear a red band of thread on the wrist to remind them of this.
This religion has recently been in the spotlight, since Madonna the pop singer, took this emblem, and became it's main representative in pop culture.

As an aside, and as extra information, Kabbalah also focuses deeply on the written and spoken word, and numbers and their meanings. I've heard from one of my professors that some Kabbalists believe that certain combinations of words and numbers can destroy a universe or, better yet, create one.

Kabbala--- also spelled Kabala, Kabbalah, Cabala, Cabbala , or Cabbalah is the esoteric Jewish mysticism as it appeared in the 12th. Kabbala has always been essentially an oral tradition. The initiation into its doctrines and practices is conducted by a personal guide to avoid the dangers inherent in mystical experiences. It lays claim to secret knowledge of the unwritten Torah that was communicated by God to Moses and Adam. Though observance of the Law of Moses remained the basic tenet of Judaism, Kabbala provided a means of approaching God directly. A major text of early Kabbala was the 12th-century Sefer ha-bahir ("Book of Brightness"), whose influence on the development of Jewish esoteric mysticism and on Judaism in general was profound and lasting.

Ladywitch says Kabala is a mystical form of Judaism, and is practiced a lot in Hollywood. I know nothing about their beliefs, but it is probably as old as Judaism itself. Practitioners wear a red string tied on one of their wrists.

Is the red string worn on the right wrist or the left? Is a picture available to see what it looks like ? Is it true that it may be worn to repel the evil in others eyes ?
