Two of the main features of a mosque include the dome, and the prayer hall. The dome is usually hemisphere-shaped, and centred above the prayer hall. The dome is often elaborately decorated, but since there are no images of life in mosques, they are adorned with calligraphy. Most of the words are in Arabic, the language of Islam, and the words at the centre of the dome translate to mean ‘God is the Greatest’. The idea of monotheism (only one God) is the core belief and is represented in the dome. Along the base of the dome are the 99 names and attributes of God. The significance of the dome is to remind Muslims of the vaults of heaven and sky, and in hot countries, for air circulation.
The second feature is the prayer hall, which contains no furniture, and is simply a space for Muslims to pray and worship. It is also used for some services, like teaching, and funeral services, but it is not used for weddings.
