Ever heard of the patience of job.or taking things with a grain of salt.or look before you leap.or buyers beware. In other words do not react to things of this world as others would, check out what is really happening before your eyes ,before you run off at the jibs/say something you will regret later.walk a mile in someone elses shoes before you blurt out some curse words at them or do something that you should not do/like physically harm someone. So on and so on.let others run into the brick wall while you look for a way to go around it : ).wait on God to be your breaker/maker of ways or you mite head down the wrong path in life. It can mean a lot I mean a loooooooooooot of things.as my ole grandma use to say -you can read the whole bible through again and again and find a new revealed meaning each and every time. Sort of like as you grow up you will learn new ways to do things in life. Or as most people know it -work smarter not harder. : ).you can either wander the desert for 40 years or accept what the truth is and enter the promised land. : ). Depends on if your God or the one God is talking to. Turn the other cheek,if you don't listen you may miss(the word/s) something that could save your life/soul.in other words keep your mouth shut and you mite here something worth listening too when someone is trying to teach you.I guess you could even tie this into when the centurion tried to grab jesus in the garden and his(the centurion) ear got chopped off. Sort of if you live by the sword you will die by the sword. Or even if you are speaking without considering how you are saying the words you may offend someones fragile senses, then they mite not hear the word. Or as Jesus said- people from his own town would not accept him for who he is, becasue they knew him as who they thought he was. Or as the saying goes-knock the dust from your feet and move on to the next (person) town as he told his apostles.I guess what I am saying is this verse can be tied into many many meanings explanations. Basically it is exactly what it says,be slow to anger/wise enough to know better.take a step back and wait to see if what you think you see is what is really what you just saw.or as the bible says these things will be self evident. Unless your blinded by sin. : ).sort of like who was that on the road to damascus.:) I can on and on and on,but you get the idea. : )
James 1:19 My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires. James is attempting to clear the way for the reception of God's truth. He begins by calling for the readers' attention: "Take note of this." The reception of the Word demands a readiness "to listen". Reluctance at this point will block the acceptance of truth. It also demands restrained speech. A continual talker cannot hear what anyone else is saying and by the same token will not hear when God speaks. Finally, the restraint of anger is demanded, for anger closes the mind to God's truth. A fiercely argumentative attitude is not conducive to the humble reception of truth.
The import of the divine counsel at James 1:19 is that by being “swift about hearing, slow about speaking, slow about wrath,” we guard against spoiling pure worship and guard against bringing ruin upon ourselves especially by the wrong use of the tongue. Let's illustrate it this way: Suppose you are approached by your mate, and he is distressed because you are not fulfilling a reasonable expectation. If this happens, listen to your spouse! Try not to become defensive. Instead, “be swift about hearing, slow about speaking, slow about wrath.” (James 1:19; Proverbs 18:13) Remember, no matter how compatible couples may be, they do not share the same outlook on all matters.
We should be people of few words. Quick to listen. Slow in becoming angry because anger causes arguments which cause further problems i.e. Broken fellowship w/God and those around you. In verse 20 it clearly states that man's anger DOES NOT(my emphasis) bring about the righteous life that God desires (for us, my emphasis).
