Thaddeus is the name of two characters that appear in the bible. Both of them were saintly personalities and are important figures in Christianity. One of them was Saint Jude who was also known as Saint Thaddeus and was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. His full name was Jude Thaddeus or Jude Lebbeus. He was the brother of St James the Less and is credited with bringing Christianity to Armenia. He is depicted with a flame around his head in several icons. He is also considered as the patron saint of desperate cases and lost causes as per the Roman Catholic Church.
The other personality named Thaddeus was one of the seventy apostles of Christ. He was a Jew by birth and was born in Edessa, a historical town in northern Mesopotamia. Eusebius, a 4th century bishop who is known for his work of trying to chronicle church history states that Thaddeus of Edessa was responsible for the instruction of King Abgar into Christianity and baptising him. He is also credited for preaching a gospel in Mesopotamia and achieved martyrdom in the year 44 AD.
