ALL of the ten commandments are relevant for today. There are timeless principle in all scripture. To understand the 10 commandments you got to understand what God's plan was and still is since day one of creation. But to put it plainly, the commandments aren't really Commandments.  In its original language, Hebrew, God was essentially describing what He wants His people to behave like. Its not like "I command you to not steal." Its much more like "My people do not steal. If you want to be called my people you will not steal." God wanted and still wants us to show Him love by our own choice. No one wants love that is forced. God is no different, in this regard.  Yah digg?

Jogusta & Guest are both right, Jesus did fulfill the Ten Commandments and all but one are reiterated in the New Testament. So even though Jesus fulfilled them, fulfilled the law, we're still not to have any gods before Jesus, we're still not supposed to murder, etc. Etc. The only one that Christians today do not need to follow is "Honor the Sabbath and keep it holy." The Sabbath was/is Saturday, Christians can set aside a day of worship on any day of the week, though typically that's Sunday.

Jogusta, there are a lot of Biblical truths in the O.T., which are still applicable to Christians today. Certainly we don't have to sacrifice, because Jesus sacrificed his life for us, he fulfilled the sacrificial system. We don't need a high priest, because Jesus is our High Priest and we only need to confess our sins to Him. Praise God. But the O.T. Is still God's Word and we can learn a lot about God from it and must. We must learn from the lives of God's people like Moses, David, etc.

I think this is right i mean the commandments were set were they not to be recognised for ever more and we cant just ignore them? But rodeorev is not right these rules were meant for christians and jews to follow for ever even if jesus came down to fulfill them,....... I mean we dont murder just because that jesus came down and fulfilled all 10 commandments!

5 Honour your father and your mother. - What if your mother or father is abusive? Respect should be earned.

6 You shall not murder. - What if it's out of self defense? If you have the chance to save yourself from a murderer but it involves murdering. You either a) murder and sin or you b) basically commit suicide. (your choosing your death) which I think is a sin but I'm not christian, I wouldn't know. Also, does this mean that killing animals for food or eating vegetables, fruit, picking a flower, using paper, etc is a sin?

8 You shall not steal. - What if your a kid in a developing country who is starving and steals a loaf of bread?

10 You shall not covet. - If this law was in place the economy would destroy itself, greed is a human emotion and everybody wants something, they can't help that. You can't help if you want something, EVERYBODY wants something.

That is why I don't think the 10 commandments are that relevant. The 10th one is actually impossible to keep. I know all you people saying the are relevant, can you not say you not coveted at least once? Look up covet in the dictionary.

I guess if I applied the rule of proverbs here id have to answer a fool acording to his folly-but I wont, yes they are relevent jesus completed the reasons behind the law -not to do away with the law-simply meaning we arent under the curse ot burden of the law but he never said disreguard the law nor can observation of the law save us we gladly do those things writen within the law because it seems good to god that we do them.

Jesus had but one commandment " Love one another as I have loved you" so other than being the basis for our laws I do not believe the ten commandments are as relevant as they were in those days.

The Ten Commandments is broadly divided into two parts. Observe, the first four commandments relates to our relation with God. The next six commandments are for our relationship with one another. So, when Jesus said we must love God and also love our neighbors, He is simply giving the summary of the entire Ten Commandments.

Matthew 5:17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them."

An expert in the interpretation of Scripture and the Laws of Moses asked Jesus which is the greatest commandment.

Matthew 22:37 Jesus replied: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."

Love for God and love towards one another cannot be separated. The first one relates to our vertical relationship with God. The second relates to our horizontal relationship with other people.

1) You shall have no other gods before me.
2) You shall not make for yourself an idol.
3) You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God.
4) Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
5) Honor your father and your mother.
6) You shall not murder.
7) You shall not commit adultery.
8) You shall not steal.
9) You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
10) You shall not covet.

The Ten Commandments is broadly divided into two parts. Observe, the first four commandments relates to our relation with God. The next six commandments are for our relationship with one another. So, when Jesus said we must love God and also love our neighbors, He is simply giving the summary of the entire Ten Commandments.

Matthew 5:17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them." 1John 5:3 "This is love for God: To obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome."
Moses came down from Mount Sinai with Ten Commandments, not Ten Suggestions. The sheer beauty of the commandments is that they codify in a handful of words acceptable human behavior, not for then or now, but for all times.

The ten commandments handed down to Moses apparently by the Lord God on two stone tablets are problematic in a lot of cases:

1 You shall have no other gods before Me Hmm, this is tricky because Allah and others are around now. This seems like a great way to prevent people having other thoughts.

2: 'You shall not make for yourself a carved image--any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Seems to make sense.

3 You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain. - seems good too, don't use curse words in other words

4 Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. - remember, have a break in the week

5 Honour your father and your mother. - gone a bit awry in contemporary society, but an important one nonetheless

6 You shall not murder. - sounds great, but George Bush is a Christian and Texas still has the Death penalty.

7 'You shall not commit adultery. - it happens a lot more. This is the one that John Proctor can't remember I think in the Crucible.

8 You shall not steal. - let's just add, unless it's Iraqi gold or oil to this one to make it more reasonable.

9 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour - unless you are acting in the interests of National Security.

10 'You shall not covet your neighbour's house; you shall not covet your neighbour's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbour's. - Again a good one, you shouldn't want your neighbours wife or his ass.

To all you readers.  The Ten Commandments was, is, and always will be relevant until Christ's return. Remember He said, Think not that I am come to destroy(get the rid of, mash up erase, or pelt away) the law or the prophets. I ain't come to do any of these things.I cone to fulfil. Therefore till heaven and earth pass away not one jot (even a small amount, one little bit) or one tittle ( a stroke or mark over a letter in writing or printing) shall in no wise pass from the law till all be fulfilled. About Jesus giving two new laws, no such thing. What He did is SUM UP the Ten Commandments into two (pick out the relevance in them) and I read---- LOVE THE LORD THY GOD WITH ALL THY HEART, THY SOUL AND THY MIND, the second is like unto the first, LOVE THY NEIGHBOUR AS THYSELF. When one look at the first four commandments they are showing love towards who? GOD OF COURSE.
The last six showing love towards who? Your neighbour. Ask yourself aren't these the Ten Commandments?

Yes because they are the foundations of the christian religion and many other religions for example the jewish and hebrew. If we ignore the ten commandments then what are the rules that we all follow ? They are the basic guidelines and rules  of life and many people follow them devoutly as many christians have since the tablets were handed to mosses all the hundreds of years ago . If you don't believe in the ten commandments or you have murdered or sinned then can you really call yourself a true christian can you call yourself one of gods people when you have gone against one of the commandments that all christians are supposed to believe in without any doubt what so ever

No, we live under grace! You don't need "rules" to follow when the Holly Spirit is there to guide you. The 10 commandments were given to show the them that they can not do it on their own, that they need God.

Dear Guest, we are under grace, but that doesn't mean that we don't have to live godly lives. Grace doesn't mean that we shouldn't follow the guidelines of the Bible or that we can do whatever we want to do. That's ridiculous. Just because we're under grace, doesn't mean we can go on sinning! God forbid. There are hundreds of things in the N.T. That we're told to do, their rules that we need to follow. We must live godly lives, that means we don't cheat, steal, lie, or have any other gods.
