This is by no means a complete description, but an awareness overview: Paul's letters to the Christians, or "Church" at Corinth were to influence them in dealing with their cultural environment and their problems within.

The church was obviously gifted (see 1:4-7), but was immature and lacking in spirituality (3:1-4). They struggled with divisions (should follow Peter or Paul - Paul urged them to follow neither Peter or himself, but Christ), sexual immorality, envy & jealousy, lawsuits, misuse of spiritual gifts, abuse of the Lord's Supper, marital discord, and false teachings concerning the resurrection. Yet despite the correctiveness of this text, we get chapters 13 & 15 expounding on love and the resurrection.

The 2nd letter had several purposes, including chastising for not heeding the 1st letter, challenging false teachers who had arrived at Corinth, and to teach more forgiveness and the grace of giving.
