Mermaids are a mythological creature. The myth has been around for many centuries through verbal accounts of seeing such creatures are common. Written accounts began to emerge in the 15h and 16th centuries. The first sighting or stories of Mermaids were formed in Ancient Near East in a place called Assyria in 1000 BC. It is said the goddess Atargatis loved a mortal man unintentionally killing him, so she jumped into the lake and took on the form of a fish, but the waters did not want to conceal her beauty thus she took on the form of a mermaid with her body being half human above the waist and half fish below.
The original myth and the myth of the mermaid has changed over the years including a rendition made by Disney called the Little Mermaid in which a witch formula was used to turn Ariel into a human and then her father had to use his Trident to keep her human in the end.
In stories like Splash a mermaid can be dried and the tail will disappear allowing the whole body to appear human. When the mermaid is wet again the tail appears. There is no 'real spell' to turn a mermaid into a human because there is no such thing as mermaids. They are a thing of myth, created based on stories about gods and goddesses. Mermaids have been depicted as evil beings, as well as sweet beings. Since the original myth had a goddess kill a man, the most popular myth is that mermaids will come up to woo men and drag them into the sea, drowning them. It is also said that humans who have such a painful love that they cannot bear it can turn into mermaids, but again it is all myths.
