Orientalism and prejudice contribute to hate crimes by perpetuating stereotypes and ignorance. If someone believes that all muslims are religous extremist, violent, and they hate Americans, than they may act violently towards them. In reality, muslim is a religion that strongly believes in non violence.

The examples you mention are really examples of ancient Far Eastern traditions. Orientalism is a term used by the late author Edward Said (not sure if he made it up, but his usage is widely accepted anyway) to describe descriptions etc, of Eastern people and cultures from an (often inaccurate) Western perspective. There is a definition here.
