There is more to it than that though... It goes way back. The Turks, Huns, moors (African Muslims) they all were invading during different periods. Through out their history, a leader would call a jihad, against another tribe, or religion, or group of people. The Crusades on the other hand, and there were more than one, were to "free" the holy land from an unrighteous occupation of souls in need of conversion.... By choice, or by force.... God deemed it to be. Misguided by greed, the church, sent in the armies of God to redeem these souls. They went and slaughtered, blinded by a thousand years of enforced faith. In many senses there is a similarity in that fanaticism, but a jihad is different. A Jihad is not called by any leader of a religion but any leader (they are all religious in the fundamental practice of Islam) and for any reason that they feel goes against their personal vision of Islam. That's why you see them all fighting each other as much as they fight against us. Not only that but the final Jihad is to bring about the end of the world... Again not something the crusaders believed (or were duped into believing).

Maybe it's not, but It's a different time. And the pope may send in his armies again, and more bloodshed. Who's fault is it. The aggressor or the defender. Maybe it's part of God's plan. Maybe it's mother nature. Maybe today's Jihad should live in peace.

I don't believe it is any different. It was wrong then and it's wrong now.
