There are literally hundreds of different types of superstition beliefs around the world - some people take these very seriously but others just laugh them off.

Superstitions began hundreds of years ago when people didn't have the knowledge that we have nowadays, for instance people used to think that our shadow or our reflection was part of our soul.

Because they didn't understand the concept of the sun or moon making shadows, they went onto believe that your reflection in a mirror was also part of our soul, so this was said to be unlucky if the mirror got broken, then your soul was broken.

Even though nowadays we know this isn't the case, but still believe it is unlucky to break a mirror, so this is a superstition.

If you are a superstitious person then you will most probably be very wary when the 13th falls on a Friday. 13 being an unlucky number and Friday being an unlucky day, but as the saying goes "unlucky for some", some actually believe 13 is a lucky number.

Some people go as far as staying at home on these days, as they are too afraid to venture out!

Other popular superstitions are;

• Do not walk under a ladder
• A rabbit's foot is good luck
• Do not put new shoes on the table
• A black cat crossing your path is lucky but in some countries it is unlucky.
• Walking on the cracks on the sidewalks are said to be unlucky
• Do not open an umbrella in the house, it is bad luck

Most people will have heard of some, if not all these superstitions - some will completely ignore them, but others won't want to take the chance.

Black cats are bad luck.
I suppose you could trip over a black cat in the dark and break your leg, but really the coat color of a cat has nothing to do with luck either way.
