It helps us to understand more about Him, and though it could never tell us even a substantial amount about Him - It points us in His direction very well. Reading it, opens a relationship door that we can walk through if we wish. Then it defines some of God's details that are otherwise hard to comprehend. It has been used by some well meaning "christians" to nearly replace GOD>>> But it's original intention was to give us encouraging information - so we could have some background to work from in this relationship WITH GOD!
It is so important to us because we believe thats how we should live our lives. If we don't obey God and ask into our hearts (soul) then we are not Christians. If we are Christians then we should read the bible every day. It is brilliant the Bible. Its okay to miss a day. Even Ministers do that.
