Overall the Holy Quran comprises of one hundred and fourteen chapters spread over a series of thirty volumes. The first chapter, which was revealed to the Holy Prophet was called Surah Alaq, while he was meditating in the cave of Hira. The Holy Prophet (P.B.you.H) was forty years old when Angel Jibrael (Gabriel) brought the first Quranic revelation to him. And the last chapter that concluded the revelation of the Quran was called Surah Nasr. However in terms of compilation, the first chapter is Surah Fateha that marks the start of the Holy Quran while the book concludes with the chapter called Surah Na'as.
As far as the longest and the shortest chapters of the Holy Quran go, the longest chapter is called Surah Baqra, which is spread over almost three volumes of the Quran. The word 'Baqra' is an Arabic word, which means 'cow'. There is a mention of cow in that chapter, that's why the chapter was named Baqra. The shortest chapter in the Holy Quran is called Surah Kauser, which comprises of only three verses.
